Frequently Asked Questions

Everything families commonly ask about home care, government funding, and what it's like to work with J.PEER Health. Can't find your answer? Call us on 0469 371 121.

Getting started with home care

What is home care?

Home care is professional support that allows older Australians to remain living in their own home. Services include personal care (showering, dressing, grooming), domestic assistance (cleaning, cooking, laundry), nursing, social support, dementia care, and more. The goal is always to preserve independence and quality of life at home.

How do I know if my parent needs home care?

Signs to watch for: struggling with daily tasks like cooking or cleaning, forgetting medications, difficulty showering safely, reduced mobility, increasing isolation, or a recent hospital stay. If you notice any of these, it's worth having a conversation about support — early help keeps people safer and more independent for longer.

Can I choose my own carer?

Yes. We try to match you with a carer whose skills, personality, and language suit your needs. If you request a specific carer — or ask to change carers — we'll do everything we can to accommodate that. The right match makes everything easier.

Government funding and the Support at Home program

What is the Support at Home program?

The Support at Home program is the Australian Government's aged care funding program for people living at home. It replaced the Home Care Packages program on 1 July 2025. It classifies clients into 8 levels based on assessed need, with quarterly budgets ranging from approximately $2,900 to $16,200 per quarter. Read our full Support at Home guide →

How do I access the Support at Home program?

Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to arrange an assessment. An assessor will visit you at home, assess your care needs, and recommend a Support at Home classification. Once approved, you choose a registered provider like J.PEER Health to deliver your care.

How much does home care cost?

If you receive government funding through Support at Home, the government subsidises most of the cost. You may pay a small income-tested client contribution. For private (self-funded) care, J.PEER Health provides clear, transparent pricing. Call 0469 371 121 for a personalised quote, or visit our pricing page.

Can home care be funded privately?

Yes — J.PEER Health provides private home care for clients who prefer not to go through the government assessment process, or who are waiting for funding to be approved. Call 0469 371 121 to discuss private care options.

Switching providers

How do I switch home care providers?

Switching is your right. You simply notify your current provider in writing, then contact J.PEER Health — we handle the rest of the transition. There's no penalty for switching, and your funding stays with you. Read our complete switching guide →

Will I lose my funding if I switch providers?

No — your Support at Home funding belongs to you, not your provider. When you switch, your classification and budget transfer to your new provider. Any unspent funds are transferred too (subject to the transition rules that apply).
